our story

Before the NFL. Before the headlines. Before The Sideline Collective had a name—there was a basketball court. Just a court, a ball, and a young athlete named Claudin Cherelus giving everything he had to every rep, every drill, every moment that nobody was watching. And there was Guy Hensley—educator, coach, mentor—who saw something deeper than talent. What started as a simple basketball connection slowly became something far more meaningful: trust built in silence, respect earned over time, and a bond formed through countless unseen moments where effort mattered more than recognition.

Claudin had talent—no question. But what defined him wasn’t what came easy. It was what came after. He was the one still working when the lights were supposed to be off. Still pushing when exhaustion said stop. Still believing when setbacks tried to convince him otherwise. He didn’t just want success. He was willing to earn it—again and again. As his journey evolved, football became the path forward. But even as helmets replaced basketballs and stadiums replaced gyms, something essential never changed: the relationship that started it all. Guy was never his football coach. But coaching was never the point. Mentorship doesn’t always come with a whistle. Sometimes it comes with consistency. With honesty. With someone refusing to let you believe your limits are final. Over time, Claudin’s path carried him from Southwest Florida to college football—and eventually to the NFL. A dream realized on paper, but built quietly over years of discipline, sacrifice, and belief that was often stronger in others than it was in himself. And through it all, he never forgot. Not the coaches who stayed late when they didn’t have to. Not the teachers who pushed him when it would have been easier not to. Not the mentors who saw more in him than he could yet see in himself. Not the family who carried burdens so he could carry a ball. Not the community that believed long before the world ever knew his name.

Because no journey like that is ever solo. There are always people behind the scenes—the ones who encourage when doubt creeps in, the ones who challenge when comfort feels easier, the ones who open doors that otherwise stay closed, the ones who simply show up, over and over again. The sideline people. The steady ones. The unseen foundation. For Guy, that truth wasn’t theoretical—it was lived. After decades in education and coaching, he had seen it repeatedly: a single adult’s belief can redirect the entire trajectory of a young life. One conversation. One moment of patience. One refusal to give up on someone who hasn’t yet learned to believe in themselves. And in Claudin’s story, he saw the same truth reflected back. So together, they named it. No one gets there alone.

The Sideline Collective was built from that conviction—not as an idea, but as a response to everything they had lived and witnessed.

It exists to honor the mentors who never asked for credit, the coaches who poured into athletes who might never say thank you loudly enough, the teachers who made space for potential, the families who sacrificed in silence, and the communities that held young people up long before success ever made them visible. But more than that, it exists to continue the work. To give student-athletes real support—not just encouragement, but opportunity. Not just motivation, but guidance. Not just access, but belief backed by action. Because sports can open doors—but what happens beyond the game is what truly defines a life. Discipline. Resilience. Leadership. Accountability. Teamwork. These aren’t just athletic traits. They’re life tools. And when they’re nurtured the right way, they last far longer than any scoreboard. Championships fade. Statistics get replaced. The lights go out. The crowd moves on. The game always ends. But what remains is who stood with you while it was being played. The coach who didn’t quit on you. The teacher who pushed you further. The mentor who refused to let you settle. The community that showed up when it mattered most. That impact doesn’t expire. That influence doesn’t fade.

The Sideline Collective exists to carry that forward.

Because while the game ends—the impact doesn’t.

our purpose

  • our mission

To equip student-athletes with the mentorship, educational support, leadership development, and life opportunities they need to succeed in sports, excel in the classroom, and thrive long after the game is over.

  • our why

Not everyone takes the shot. Not everyone scores the touchdown. Not everyone stands in the spotlight. But behind every student-athlete, every graduate, every leader, and every success story, there is a team of people who believed first. The coach who stayed late. The mentor who checked in. The teacher who refused to let them quit. The parent, volunteer, or community member who showed up when it mattered most. Those people stand on the sideline. And while the world often celebrates what happens on the field or court, we know the real impact happens far beyond the final score. At The Sideline Collective, we aren't chasing trophies. We're building character. We're creating opportunities.
